Ligna 2007 sawmill technology: Band saws in tandem
07/08/2007 - 09:39
Ligna+ 2007 Saegewerkstechnik Mid-sized sawmills are more and more in the focus of the saw producers. In most cases it is band saws. Amongst others, Dr. Stefan Möhringer, Managing Director of Möhringer/ Braun-Canali, has confirmed this. Gregor Held, Marketing Manager at Bongioanni, sees a strong demand for tandem band saws in order to achieve a higher potential output with two saws behind one another. The Double-Cut-Principle using double-sided sharpened bands for the forwards- and backwards cut, already popular in France, is now winning more and more fans in Germany and Austria as well. Bongioanni is able to sell more machines on the Italian domestic market. Latest examples are the band saw models SNR for construction timber and glue lam producers Silani and Mamo Legnami. Mamo Legnami – one of the leading saw mills in Italy with 60,000 cbm cutting capacity plans to cut especially oak and chestnut.
Artiglio Tandembandsaege BandsaegenThe topic of conversation at the Artiglio booth was the great interest shown by Russian clients. Although there are mainly chipper-circular saw-combinations. Artiglio presented the new tandem band saws STC 130/TD, STC 140/TD and STC 160/TD for the first time. The distance between the two bands is only 25 cm. One can move the two units hydraulically apart in order to change the blade. The advantage of the narrow gap is that the second cut is very exact. Dr. Annalisa Rovatti, Marketing Manager, recommends the new band saw for saw mills from 30,000 cbm cut upwards. The new tandem band saw is already being used by Italian pallet producer Monari and Padona Legnami.

Rolf Volmert, responsible for Sales and Marketing of Primultini in Germany, sees a rising demand for tilted band saws. Primultini Laubholzsaegewerk BlockbandsaegePrimultini showed the SHG S10 in combination with a horizontal circular saw. The machine is fixed directly at the band saw. The board can already be edged during the round wood cut. One expects at Primultini that especially deciduous saw mills are going to use this accessoire. Primultini was able to sell a few band saws in combination with shavers to Romania, amongst them one machine to the softwood sawmill IRIS. In Italy one of the biggest timber traders in the country Imola Legno, bought the band saw. They are planning to cut tropical timber at their new saw mill in Molfetta, South Italy.
Blockwagen LBL BrentaA lot of saw mills in Germany ask for second hand band saw. The complete overhaul, which is essential according to German laws, would make the machines much more expensive though saw mills usually buy a new model in the end.
New developed block carriage systems were of less importance this year compared to the Ligna+ 2005. LBL Brenta showed the Spider. The positioning can be made much more accurate and faster because chains have been replaced by thread rods.

Where care for the bands is asked for, visitors could find something at Iseli, Zenz and Vollmer. Zenz presented the welding machine and grinding machine formerly produced by Alber. Zenz has taken over the production of horizontal band saws from Alber in spring. Zenz offers the start of the care for the blades with 7,600 € for the welding machine and 7,500 € for the grinding machine.
