Good prospects for timber trade in Finland
30/05/2007 - 11:19

Timber trade in Finland is now at record level. Good prices and intense demand have boosted timber trade in the course of the spring.

The forecast at the beginning of the year was that commercial felling in private forests would amount to about 47 million m3. However, the present outlook is that the use of timber will exceed the forecasts made at the beginning of the year.

The Russian decision to apply export duties on timber have so far had no impact on the timber market since the first increase will not enter into force until 1 July 2007. Because last winter provided bad felling conditions due to warm weather, there is now a lively trade in standing timber suitable for being harvested in summer time. This demand has also had an impact on prices.

Trees, branches, crowns and stumps originating from young stand improvement are in great demand for use as energy source. Energy wood has become a separate market sector with its own pricing mechanism.
