In Austria, the bark beetle crisis, since 2018, had affected the regions of Upper and Lower Austria. The pressure has disappeared there by more than half, but there are still around 500,000 m3 in Lower Austria for 2021 and half in Upper Austria. New are the developments in less affected areas.
In the South, the Vaïa storm of autumn 2018 had been succeeded by two snowy winters with damage to trees. In the summer of 2021, the bark beetle attacked. The high temperatures allowed the beetle to breed for two generations at high altitude. A number of poorly exploitable protection forests are concerned.
The low rainfall in winter 2021/2022 and early 2022 is not good news, nor is the extreme drought that is currently prevailing. In addition, the storms at the end of winter generated too much windfall.
All of this indicates that the bark beetle crisis is here to stay.
