Finland: Slight decrease in pellet production in 2023

In 2023, a total of 354,000 tonnes of wood pellets was produced in Finland. The pellet production volume decreased by 2% from the previous year. Pellet imports decreased from the previous year, and the export volume was the smallest in the history of the statistics, the Finnish Natural Forest Institute reported.

  • In 2023, wood pellet production totalled 354,000 tonnes in Finland, down by 2% from the previous year.
  • According to the data of Finnish Customs, pellet imports into Finland totalled 138,000 tonnes, showing a decrease of 26 per cent from the previous year. The three largest wood pellet import countries were Estonia, Lithuania and Denmark. In total, 70,000 tonnes of pellets were imported from Estonia, 32,000 tonnes from Lithuania, and 25,000 tonnes from Denmark.
  • Exports of wood pellets decreased significantly. Total exports of wood pellets were only 500 tonnes (change from the previous year -97%). 
  • The calculated consumption (production + imports - exports) of wood pellets in Finland amounted to 492,000 tonnes (-7%).
  • Deliveries of domestic pellets totalled 306,000 tonnes (-21%). The volume of pellets delivered to heating and power plants, as well as large buildings, was 262,000 tonnes. In addition, 44,000 tonnes were delivered to households and agriculture.

The data of Finnish Customs on foreign trade in wood pellets are preliminary, and the final figures will be published in the autumn of 2024.
