Report on the first edition of Saudi Wood Show

The Saudi Wood Show took place from 12 to 14 May, attracting 7,300 visitors and featuring 183 exhibitors from 53 different countries. This inaugural edition of the Saudi Wood Show attracted many serious buyers and visitors, mainly from neighboring countries such as Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. Exhibitors included companies from Europe, China, Malaysia, India and local Saudi businesses. Although the event was smaller than the Dubai Wood Show, the attendees were very engaged and serious about business.

Focus on exhibitors and sector

Exhibitors represented a wide range of industries, including wood exporters, plywood manufacturers, interior manufacturers and flooring companies. Chinese companies mainly presented wall panels, hardware, MDF and plywood products.

There is a notable increase in demand for raw materials such as hardwood, plywood and MDF panels. The construction sector in Saudi Arabia highly requires construction materials such as softwood construction timber and formwork panels. Additionally, there is significant demand for pallet wood and pallet manufacturing.

Market insights and future developments

During our visits to local warehouses and meetings with importers, it became apparent that many companies have annual contracts for their wood supplies. Most of the softwoods come from Austria, Romania, Finland, Sweden and North America (USA/Canada). Hardwoods such as mahogany, iroko, sapele and wenge are mainly imported from African countries, while oak, ash and beech come from Italy, Germany and Croatia. Timber from companies such as Abalon, Florian, Pollmeier, Metsa, DABG and VM Holz was observed in several warehouses. Some companies also source hardwoods from Malaysia and panels from Thailand, Indonesia, China and local manufacturers.

Saudi Arabia is expected to seek more partners and suppliers in the future. The Saudi Wood Show has paved the way for new market opportunities, as many companies have established new connections and are exploring further possibilities. From the next edition of the fair we can expect an increase in the number of importers and significant growth opportunities for new companies.

Challenges and opportunities

One of the main challenges for new companies entering the Saudi market is the language barrier. While many businesses are run by Arabs who have significant purchasing power and growth potential, small and medium-sized businesses often lack staff who can speak common international languages. Additionally, some visitors to our booth did not have appropriate business cards or websites, despite having expressed interest in large orders.

Overall, there is considerable room for improvement and more business opportunities after the Saudi Wood Show. We can expect better prospects and more business interactions in future editions of the event.
