Swedish softwood sawlog stocks increase 10% in Q1/2024

At the end of the first quarter of 2024, softwood sawlog stocks in Sweden showed a 10% increase from the same quarter last year, totaling 3.2 million m3. However, overall wood stock volumes fell by 3% to 8.3 million m3, according to the Swedish Forest Agency.

While softwood sawlogs recorded gains, total pulpwood stocks declined by 7% to 4.3 million m3. Softwood pulpwood decreased by 6% to 3.5 million m3, and hardwood pulpwood saw a reduction of 13% to 0.8 million m3.

Additionally, the volume of pulp chips plummeted by 25% to 0.7 million m3. Despite the increase in softwood sawlog stocks, levels are still 10% below the first-quarter averages recorded from 2019 to 2023. Stocks of pulp chips and other pulpwood types also remain significantly below the five-year average.
