Description |
Pink Ivory, also called Red Ivory, is a very rare wood from Africa. The Pink Ivory tree grows predominantly in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. Heartwood ranges in color from a light pastel pink to deep watermelon red. It is very dense, heavy and stable. It is great for pool and billiard cues, knife handles, inlays and other turnery projects. It takes an incredible polish.
The timber was once considered "rarer than diamonds”, and was the royal wood of the Zulus with great importance in local customs. Harvesting was only allowed by the chief of the tribe and rumor has it this was only after he had killed a lion. Anyone else possessing the wood (including foreigners) was liable to be punished with death. We have live edge boards in 1 inch thick and plenty of odd thicker sizes such as 1,5,2 and 3 inch and sizes in between. Mostly 4-6ft long and about 4- 8 inches wide, but occasionally longer and ***** will include a yellowish sapwood and might include knots ,bark inclusions and other natural rustic defects. We also have turning squares in 1,5 and 2” thicknesses as well as intact logs. |
